“A Short Article on Art Expression” is an essay that Kaltenbach wrote in late 1968, first published in the School for Visual Arts newspaper. It appeared again 1969 in the catalog for Harald Szeemann’s groundbreaking “When Attitudes Become Form” exhibition in Bern, Switzerland and again in the exhibition brochure for Kaltenbach’s solo show at the Whitney Museum, “Room Alterations” in late 1969. The essay seeks to define art expression through a series of statements and questions related to the manipulation and alteration of perception.  The text is shown below:

At the time of his 2020 retrospective, "Stephen Kaltenbach: The Beginning and The End" at the Manetti Shrem Museum at UC Davis, Kaltenbach bequeathed five of his bronze sidewalk plaques (ART WORKS and the elements works, AIR, WATER, EARTH & FIRE) to his alma mater to be embedded in the sidewalks around the campus.  Since there were no available examples of FIRE, Kaltenbach had this work recast in bronze as five Artist Proofs.  All of the Artist Proofs have been sold except number, 5/5.

Lucy Lippart, New York-based critic and author, curated 557,087 in 1969. 

The exhibition was held at the World's Fair Pavilion at the Seattle Center and the title was based on Seattle's population. 

557,087 is regarded by many historians as being the first large-scale showing of Conceptual Art. 

Of the 69 artists participating by sharing their ideas and concepts on a single 4" x 6" file card

 (copies of each formed the loose leaf catalog in an envelope), only Kaltenbach contributed a blank card.
