PRESS RELEASE
Whereas utilizing the theme of Black & White seems pretty straightforward on the surface (although wide-ranging) and all of the art in this group show of ten artists refrain from color; the works could not be more diverse in media or as unexpected in content.
The ten artists in BLACK & WHITE at Another Year in LA are Harold Arzate, Marta Edmisten, Stephen Kaltenbach, John Knuth, Bruce Nauman, Parris Patton, Cathy Stone, David E. Stone, David Trulli and Hong Chun Zhang and their works utilize painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and print making - all very cut and dry, standard media – all very BLACK and WHITE.
It is beyond the basic description of the media used that the grey area begins - like John Knuth’s paintings on canvas that were “painted” using tens of thousands of flies in a cage (that housed the canvas) that drink the diluted paint and then vomit this paint onto the surface to create minute speckled patterns.
Or the B&W life scale surveillance photographs of men waiting in front of the NYC public library to hook up and cheat on their partners (with the artist who had placed a personal’s ad on a website) from a series entitled Blind Date.
Or an uncharacteristically abstract image in a print by Bruce Nauman.
Or a very early pre-conceptual sculptural work by Stephen Kaltenbach from 1964 that in his words “represented the move to integration with the environment and the move toward a minimalist strategy was just coalescing”. This sculpture doesn’t sit on the pedestal completely but sits on and hangs over the edge.
BLACK & WHITE never seemed so colorful.
