Stephen Fleming - Artist Statement

I have always been interested in the human body as an inspiration for art making. This interest has manifested itself in a search for forms that examine the figure from different perspectives.  Perspectives that might not be as heroic as those we are familiar with in history.  We like to think of the human body as poetic and beautiful, but there is also something sad and funny about what our bodies are: both actually and metaphorically. These works might be thought of as an exploration of what it is like to have a body, rather than using the figure as a symbol for some moral ideal.  In fact, thinking of them as related to figures is really not necessary at all.

Along the way I have produced many false starts, failures or unfinished ‘things’ that have piled up in my studio and never got to the meaning stage of existence.  Latter I ‘found’ them in some unplanned relationship with other objects.  Some of these things and their relationships to one another are ‘re-created’ here.

I know that my efforts as an artist reveal an element of personal dysfunction or imperfection.  But in the end, these objects are the products of something inside me, revealing what I did not known, but had suspected, about myself - not necessarily what I would have preferred to find, but despite my resistance they have found me.
