PRESS RELEASE

When Another Year in LA began 2015, we decided that the gallery would be an online gallery exclusively.  Subsequently, we have held several physical exhibitions in conjunction with the online shows each month.  Each artist is now given the option to hold a physical show as well as online show and many have.

Rachel Clarke has chosen to only exhibit her virtual sculptures only online and given the nature of her upcoming first solo exhibition, MERGING SPACES, at Another Year in LA in May, 2015 - we agree with her choice.

From her statement, Clarke say, “MERGING SPACES combines physical and virtual modes of making, and through an augmented reality application it embodies virtual and physical ways of experiencing it.  As a comment on extreme consumerism in our contemporary lifestyle, the ephemeral sculptures I create are comprised of the waste products of that lifestyle -- banal junk such as food packaging, advertising mailers, plastic bags -- as well as discarded digital information. Through physical and digital processes they become artworks that can be experienced as objects of contemplation, even beauty. This is my way of reclaiming the sense of agency and meaning that the hyper-capitalist global economic system has taken away from the individual.”

AUGMENTED REALITY

Augmented Reality is a way by which images, animations, videos and 3D sculptures are virtually installed into the physical environment through the screen of a viewer’s mobile device (smart phone or tablet).

When a viewer holds up their mobile device to a designated “tracking image” a virtually installed artwork pops out and appears to be integrated into the physical environment, “augmenting” reality. In this exhibition, virtual sculptures will pop out of images on the viewer’s computer screen, merging real and virtual objects and spaces.

While pointing the mobile device at the tracking image, the viewer can move around the virtual sculpture to fully experience its dimensionality and relationship to the real environment.
