INSIDE OUT
Photographs by Nancy Braver
January 1 – February 29, 2015
Los Angeles based artist, Nancy Braver’s solo exhibition, “INSIDE OUT”, is her first solo show at Another Year in LA. Like billions of other people worldwide, I often peruse FaceBook to see my “friend’s” vacations, favorite meals, celebrations, artwork, sunsets, favorite movies, political rants, clever memes, cat videos, unusual news stories and more. Every once in a while something pops off my computer screen as being larger or more profound than just the image I am looking at. That is the case of many of the images I have seen on artist Nancy Braver’s FaceBook page.
I was first taken by her regular postings of photographs of the sky, usually
blue. Then on August 26, 2015, she posted a most haunting, compelling and
strangely isolated-kind-of lonely image looking out of a hotel room window
either at sunset or sunrise. The photograph showed the street below with a
white car speeding by, a strip mall across the street with illuminated signage
and then the reflection of a table lamp from within the room. I couldn’t take
my eyes off of it. It was simple, elegant, compelling and haunting,
simultaneously.
Nancy continued to post similar images looking out of the hotel windows with her own image reflecting from within the room for several months. She was in the hotels because she suffers from dysautonomia, a medical condition that causes a malfunction of the autonomic nervous system and due to her home having no air conditioning (and heat exacerbating her condition), while receiving treatments both here in Los Angeles and in northern California..
Prevented from working on her sculpture due to her illness, Braver turned to photography as a creative process and the resulting diarist photographs from her hotel room captured her view of the outside world shown in this compelling exhibition, INSIDE OUT.
