Greetings from Los Angeles, Part 1 - May 2004
One Year in LA
May, 2004 Exhibition Description
Patron and Souvenir Editions from May
During my first 122 days of being in Los Angeles, I had been trying to maintain an innocent and naive attitude ('beginner's mind') about my surroundings to observe what I will later probably take for granted. Understanding that in 4 months one couldn't possibly comprehend the vast nuances of large city like Los Angeles, this exhibition is subtitled, Part 1.
To make this exhibition cohesive, I found myself most interested in moments of potential (empty spaces for movie stars signature and hand & footprints) at Grauman's Chinese theater) and ambition lost (like broken or removed signage from firms no longer in business) and timelessness (like the surface of the La Brea Tar Pits at night or a plastic souvenir from Grauman's cast in bronze) and hopelessness (like the tire marks left after a car crashed into a freeway barrier and the endless job of painting out graffiti).
